Parents visit osteopaths for many reasons to support their child’s health. Children, like adults, can be affected by general joint and muscle issues, which is one of those reasons people visit an osteopath.
As osteopathic care is based on the individual needs of the patient, it will vary depending on your child’s age and the diagnosis. Osteopaths generally use a wide range of gentle hands-on techniques that focus on releasing tension, improving mobility and optimising function. This is often used together with exercise and helpful advice. Some osteopaths have been trained in very gentle techniques which are particularly used to assess and treat very young children, including new-borns. You do not need to consult your GP before you visit an osteopath, although you may wish to do so.
At the Bexley Osteopathic Clinic, although we have 8 osteopaths, younger children are only ever booked in to see the ones with specific experience and training in this area. With some teenagers and some problems this may not always be necessary, for example a footballer aged 14 may be better off seeing one of our team experienced in football and sports injuries. If you are not sure if osteopathy is appropriate or who your child should see, don’t worry, just call the clinic and we will try to advise you.
The osteopath will take a full case history, examine as appropriate and then tell you their diagnosis along with what sort of treatment they think would be best so that you can decide what you would like to do. If the osteopath thinks that another type of treatment would be better or further investigation is needed, they will tell you.
Please remember that for legal reasons, children up to the age of 16 coming for an appointment must be accompanied by a parent named on the birth certificate or by a legal adoptive parent/ guardian.

I was unable to walk straight However, after one treatment with Dom I left the clinic walking much better and in less pain. Dom is very knowledgeable, friendly and caring and I felt completely relaxed in his care. He explained what was going on with my body and demonstrated exercises I should do at home. I have been a few times and found everyone very friendly and helpful and always feel welcome by the reception team I would definitely recommendPosted on Roger AmbroseTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Another excellent session with Patrick. A comprehensive treatment and feeling much much better. Crucially, Patrick made me aware of the series of exercises and stretches I need to undertake to improve and maintain my mobility and flexibility. Thoroughly recommended.Posted on JAGTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I’ve been coming to this clinic for over 14 years, and I truly can’t recommend it highly enough. Patrick Norman is an exceptional osteopath – deeply knowledgeable, incredibly intuitive, and every single session makes a real difference. Whether it’s a long-standing issue or something new, he has an extraordinary ability to get to the root of the problem and help the body heal. The clinic itself has such a warm, welcoming atmosphere. The staff are always kind, friendly and genuinely empathetic – you feel seen and cared for from the moment you walk through the door. It’s rare to find somewhere that combines clinical expertise with such human care.Posted on Jo Southgate (SuperJo)Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Thirteen days ago, I had my first appointment with Adele Sharp at Bexley Osteopathic Clinic. My shoulder had been aching constantly, and I genuinely thought it was something I’d have to live with. But after Adele performed dry needling and osteopathy, the improvement has been remarkable. I’m so grateful. The clinic itself was a lovely, clean, tidy, fresh paint and the staff and management were extremely friendly and welcoming. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Bexley Osteopathic Clinic to anyone looking for professional, effective, and caring treatment.
